Ullapool

Situated on the shores of Loch Broom, Ullapool offers the perfect place to explore the Highlands of Scotland. Commissioned by the British Fisheries Society and designed by Thomas Telford in 1788, the name Ullapool is taken from Norse and highlights the Viking Heritage of the area.

The village now has almost 1500 inhabitants and has become a very important port and tourist destination. Situated just over an hour along the A835 from Inverness, Ullapool is the perfect place to continue onto such beautiful places as Achiltibuie, Lochinver, The Summer Isles and John O’Groats. While nearby there is Leckmelm Gardens, Lael Forest Garden, Corrieshalloch Falls, Dun Canna fort, Achmelvich Beach and a wide range of Hills and Munros to walk and climb.

The Harbour of Ullapool is the bustling lively heart of the village with boats from all over the world landing catches you’ll never be short of experiencing the best seafood the Atlantic has to offer. Even the local celebrity Sammy, the resident grey seal, knows this is the best place to come to eat.

The harbour also boasts tall ships, cruise ships, research vessels and many other visitors from around the world providing spectacular sights all year round. But it’s not just boats to be seen. Ullapool has a diverse range of wildlife including sea birds, eagles, red squirrels, dolphins and whales.

Culturally, Ullapool plays host to a wide range of festivals and events including the Ullapool Book festival, Loopallu Rock and Pop festival, Ullapool Guitar festival, angling competitions, tall ship visits, geology workshops, traditional Gaelic dance, and museum and galleries. Throughout the year the local pubs also host a wide range of musical artists from local talent and international artists showcasing everything from traditional Scottish contemporary music to modern pop and rock, while Ullapool Pipe Band performs weekly in the village.

Eating out in Ullapool offers a range of food from locally sourced sea food, to pub food and Chinese and Indian cuisines & takeaways. While for small meals there are a  number of coffee shops, delicatessens and a local tesco to stock up at.
